News from 2016

The role of religion in international development cooperation was the focus of a seminar arranged by CRS and Svenska Missionsrådet on the 8^th of December.

On the 2nd of December Lotta Knutsson Bråkenhielm defended her thesis “Religion – evolutionens missfoster eller kärleksbarn?: Kognitionsvetenskaplig religionsforskning och dess relevans för religiösa trosföreställningars rationalitet".

Several researchers within the program Impact of Religion have got new grants from the Swedish Research Council.

Dr Karin Jarnkvist, from Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall, will be engaged in a research project at CRS during the spring semester 2017.

CRS welcomes two new guest researchers in January thanks to grants from the Swedish Institute´s Visby Programme.

A conference on Syria in Sweden gathered some 50 participants in the Ethnographical Museum in Stockholm October 13-14.

Almosts 40 researchers from all over the world applied for the three positions as research fellows in the field of Religion and Migration at the Uppsala Religion and Society Research Centre.

The church of Sweden still plays a role in the Swedish society. A new book by CRS’ former director Professor Emeritus Anders Bäckström and former archbishop Anders Wejryd explores how the church is present in contemporary Sweden.

Impact researchers will be taking part in a variety of different conferences covering topics as diverse as  "The Role of Religion in Welfare and Care" to a conference with the title "Science and tested experience". Information on a selection of these can be seen here:

26 of May Impact researcher Margareta Brattström, Prof. in civil law, and Anna Singer, Prof. in civil law focusing on family law was invited to an open hearing in the parliamentary committee on civil affairs.

Moa Kindström Dahlin holds a LLD in public law from Stockholm University and will belong to theme 4 in the Impact programme.

Anneli Winell is a sociologist of religion and her research fields are media, religion and culture. She also has a background as a journalist specialized in culture. 

The anthology “Sedd men osedd”, subtitled Om folkkyrkans paradoxala närvaro inför 2020-talet, will be issued in June by the publishing house Verbum.

Mikael Leidenhag is a doctoral student at the Faculty of Theology. 20 of May he defends his thesis "Naturalizing God?: A Critical Evaluation of Religious Naturalism."

Associate Professor of Public International Law at the Faculty of Law Rebecca Thorburn Stern has been appointed an expert adviser by the government to work on the Report to Find Legal Routes to Seek Asylum in the EU.

Dr Kristin Aune, a senior research fellow at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University in the UK, is visiting CRS for a month.

23 of May Maria Eckerdal defends her thesis “En katolsk liturgi för en katolsk kyrka: Yngve Brilioths liturgiska reformsvävande 1914-1942".

Uppsala University has created a forum for interdisciplinary research about racism with the aim to increase the knowledge in this field. 

Many of the propositions made recently point out that certain groups of children who are living in Sweden are denied of their human rights.

In the anthology “Reconsidering Religion, Law, and Democracy - New challenges for Society and Research” sixteen scholars from different research fields describe and discuss how Western societies handle religion in its increasingly pluralistic and complex form.

Dr. Johan von Essen has joined the Impact programme.

That is what the Impact-researcher Marta Axner Ims shows in her report. The report done on behalf of The Equality Ombudsman (DO) is a media analysis of how Muslims are represented in Swedish news media during the winter 2014-2015.

With start in June 2015, for a period of one year, Jihong Shen from China and Singapore Bible College is visiting CRS.
