Islamophobia, Stigmatised Minorities and Muslim Participation in the Political Life of Sweden
The aim is, a) to study the mechanisms by which “Muslims” in Sweden are construed as a distinct minority, b) to investigate the extent to which the revived Islamophobic tradition has influenced public policy and discourse, and c) to explore the various ways in which this influences Muslim participation in civic society and political life. The study proceeds from the notion that minorities are not simply given; they are created by statistics, political policies, public discourse and social negotiations.
Gardell has presented his results in monographs and articles; at various international conferences, and was called as an expert witness during the trial against Anders Behring Breivik.
