Who is to Maintain the Family?

The aim is to discover where the line is to be drawn regarding the mutual maintenance obligations of family members and different generations in different European societies. The case studies, chosen for their religious distinctiveness, will include Germany (Catholic/Protestant), Malta (Catholic), Spain (Catholic) and Sweden (Protestant). The relation between law and practice will be studied with a specific focus on the balance between the responsibility of the family and that of the welfare state.

The research has been in active dialogue with researchers in other countries, not least though participation in conferences and symposia including the Impact programmes own international symposium on the rights of the child held in May 2013.

The work is conducted in collaboration with the researcher Mosa Sayed (Families, Law and Society).
Participating researcher: Margareta Brattström.
